EarthApple - Recycling

Reuse, Reduce and Recycle -- Together we can make a difference.

The Verizon® Yellow Pages published by Idearc Media can be recycled into a wide variety of materials. That is why we want you to join us in the campaign to recycle outdated directories. The best — and easiest — way to recycle your phone book is to put it in your curbside bin. If your community does not have curbside recycling, you can recycle through a community resource.

Environmental Seal

Idearc Media was one of the first publishers to sign the Yellow Pages Association and Association of Directory Publishers Joint Environmental Guidelines, which underscores our commitment to environmental responsibility. The Guidelines focus on source reduction of telephone directories, enhanced recycling programs and environmentally sensitive manufacturing practices. You can view the Guidelines at www.ypassociation.org/environmental.

Reuse

The paper that Idearc Media uses for directories is a clear example of successfully reusing material.

  • The white and yellow pages are printed on paper containing up to 40% post-consumer recycled fiber.
  • When available, the remaining paper content comes from wood chips and pulp — waste products of the lumber industry.
  • Idearc Media only buys paper from vendors who demonstrate sound environmental practices.

Reduce

Idearc Media has reduced and continues to look for ways to reduce the amount of paper we use by:

  • Promoting our online local search engine, www.superpages.com, a great Internet resource;
  • Providing directories on CD-ROM to large business customers;
  • Adjusting the dimensions of some directories for more efficient use of printing presses to reduce waste;
  • Reducing directory paper weight;
  • Using computerized systems that more efficiently use directory page space to reduce paper consumption; and
  • Improving inventory management and stock reduction initiatives.

Our goal is to help local merchants get information to consumers who are ready to buy, and we achieve that through multiple products. If you prefer to access local information through Superpages.com® on the Internet or Superpages Mobile on a cell phone or BlackBerry®, you can let us know by calling 1-800-888-8448.

Recycle
  • According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Yellow Pages directories represent only 0.3% of the municipal solid waste stream. In comparison, standard mail and newspapers represent 2.4% and 4.9%, respectively.
  • The inks our printing supplier uses are environmentally sound, which allows our directories to be recycled because the ink can be removed and is biodegradable.
  • There are many secondary uses for outdated directories: environmentally friendly cellulose insulation, new directory paper, packing material, animal bedding, compost, tissue-grade products, wallboard, envelopes, hydro-mulch and roll cores.
  • Directory distribution bags can be recycled and used by manufacturers of composites made from waste wood fiber and reclaimed plastics for decking and fencing.
  • Directory distribution bags can be recycled and used by manufacturers of composites made from waste wood fiber and reclaimed plastics for decking and fencing;
  • We sell our salvaged materials to companies who recycle the materials into new products.
  • And, we recycle in our own facilities. At our headquarters, each employee has a personal recycling bin, and they recycle about nine tons of paper a month.
  • Many of our directories have a Recycling Guide, which provides information about how and where to recycle directories.
