EarthApple - Recycling

Recycling - Together we can make a difference.

The Verizon® Yellow Pages provided by Idearc Media can be recycled into a wide variety of materials: environmentally friendly cellulose insulation, hydro-mulch and new directory paper, for example. When you recycle your outdated directory, you help reduce the volume of materials in the waste stream and you help ensure that buyers of recycled materials can get the materials they need.

That is why we want you to join us in the campaign to recycle outdated directories. The best — and easiest — way to recycle your phone book is to put it in your curbside bin, if your community has curbside recycling. If not, you can recycle through a community resource.

What Idearc Media is doing to help conserve both natural resources and available landfill space:

Reuse

The paper that Idearc Media uses for our directories is a clear example of successfully reusing material.

  • The white and yellow pages are printed on paper containing up to 40% post-consumer recycled fiber.
  • The remaining paper content comes from wood chips and pulp — waste products of the lumber industry; and
  • Idearc Media only buys paper from vendors who demonstrate sound environmental practices.

Reduce

Idearc Media has reduced and continues to look for ways to reduce the amount of paper we use:

  • Promoting the use of directories on CD-ROM to large business customers;
  • Providing our online local search engine, www.superpages.com, is a great resource for Internet users;
  • Adjusting the dimensions of some directories for more efficient use of printing presses to reduce waste;
  • Reducing directory paper weight;
  • Using computerized systems that more efficiently use directory page space to reduce paper consumption; and
  • Improving inventory management and stock reduction initiatives.

Recycle

  • We give the media information about where to recycle dated directories;
  • Many of our directories have a Recycling Guide, directing consumers where to best recycle their directories;
  • The inks our printing supplier uses are as environmentally sound as is practical; this allows our directories to be recycled because the ink can be removed and is biodegradable;
  • There are many secondary uses for outdated directories: environmentally friendly cellulose insulation, new directory paper, packing material, animal bedding, compost, tissue-grade products, wallboard, envelopes, hydro-mulch and roll cores;
  • Directory distribution bags can be recycled and used by manufacturers of composites made from waste wood fiber and reclaimed plastics for decking and fencing;
  • We sell our salvaged materials to companies who recycle the materials into new products; and
  • We recycle in our own facilities. At our headquarters, each employee has a personal recycling bin. They recycle about nine tons of paper a month.
